We stopped punishing children who struggle with academic learning many years ago, isn't it time we stopped punishing children who struggle with behaviour? The compliance model of behaviour management used frequently in schools has at its core that all children are culpable and should face punitive consequences of their poor behaviour choices, if they are really their conscious choices.
So here's a really good article by Tim Taylor in the Guardian which takes a look at why the current systems aren't working for all children and why some 6,000 are being frequently excluded as well as the 16,000 who choose not to attend as they are either being bullied or feel incapable of managing the rigour of a school day without apparently creating havoc.
Do take a look at the black and white comments on this article which show why it is so difficult to initiate a supportive prpgramme without the fullest support of the head and all the SLT. It's really difficult to do in one classroom, in isolation from the rest of the school and it's also not possibe to have a lukewarm, dip-the-toe in approach to SBM. It's all in or all out
